excerpt from The Porpoise Given Life Have a Heart Cetaceans have a four-chambered heart, just like all mammals. But whales, dolphins, and porpoises have a unique "marvelous network" of reservoirs for collecting extra supplies of oxygenated blood that keeps their body core warm and alive in extreme temperatures and changes in environment. This enables adequate blood flow to the muscles used for diving and swimming while using the oxygen stored in the reservoirs to maintain the heart and brain—the two organs that depend on a constant supply of oxygen to survive. powered by AkoComment Tweaked |
