The Porpoise Given Life

Have a Heart

Cetaceans have a four-chambered heart, just like all mammals. But whales, dolphins, and porpoises have a unique "marvelous network"  of reservoirs for collecting extra supplies of oxygenated blood that keeps their body core warm and alive in extreme temperatures and changes in environment. This enables adequate blood flow to the muscles used for diving and swimming while using the oxygen stored in the reservoirs to maintain the heart and brain—the two organs that depend on a constant supply of oxygen to survive.
You can divide the sins of man into "hot sins" and "cold sins." Hot sins are sins of passion and hot-blooded appetites. Sins like adultery, substance abuse, violence, gluttony, and revenge are all hot sins. Cold sins are just as deadly, but much less sexy and entertaining. These include indifference to poverty, couldn't- care- less-ness toward hunger, smugness toward the homeless, and a cold shoulder to the stranger in our midst. We need to learn to tend the core of our being – our heart of compassion and empathy and our mind focused on creative and interdependent living - so that we do not become cold: cold-blooded, cold-hearted, and prone to cold sins. We need to develop and maintain a marvelous network of global awareness, prayer, and friendships within communities different from our own to keep a constant flow of compassion running through our lives.
